Le “roi-prêtre” n’existe (peut-être) pas.: Christianisme et royauté sacrée dans les Grassfields (Cameroun)

International audienceThe anthropological figure of the priest-king hardly agrees with the reality of the institution of the Grassfields chieftaincy. More exactly, we observe a motif whose history brings us back to the appearance of a particular form, « religion », and to the presence of an officiating prophet : the missionary. The analysis goes back to the colonial circumstances in which the concept of « religion » was introduced, a prism that allows one to think about the « already-there » and to produce with several voices a biblical account of the origins of royalty. The object of the religion in question is revealed in the context of a cohabitation with the missions, in the political and ritual issues generated by the spread of Christian doctrine and liturgy, leading the sovereign to don religious clothing allowing for the investiture of the symbolic places of Christianity. This article reveals an unknown part of the fate of Grassfields royalty during the colonial period, where the body-fetish of the king is fetishized anew.La figure anthropologique du roi-prêtre peine à s’accorder avec la réalité de l’institution de la chefferie Grassfields. Plus exactement, nous observons un motif dont l’histoire nous ramène à l’apparition d’une forme particulière, la « religion », et à la présence d’un prophète officiant : le missionnaire. L’analyse proposée revient sur les circonstances coloniales dans lesquelles le concept de « religion » fut introduit, un prisme qui permet de penser le déjà-là et de produire à plusieurs voix un récit biblique des origines de la royauté. L’objet de la religion dont il est question se révèle dans le cadre d’une cohabitation avec les missions, dans les enjeux politiques et rituels que génère la propagation de la doctrine et de la liturgie chrétiennes, amenant le souverain à endosser des habits religieux à même d’investir les lieux-symboles du christianisme.
